Sea Kale Life Cycle Series
Every year the shingle beaches between Bexhill and St. Leonards are transformed by the emergence of Sea Kale. The baby plants are shades of aubergine and purple. Sometimes they appear randomly in the shingle, sometimes they emerge from the plant skeleton of the previous year. Then as the plant develops, the leaves change to shades of green tinged with blue. They are tough and waxy with undulating edges (which first gave me the idea to use batik as a technique to depict them). I was fascinated by their annual life cycle, the way that they change and can survive in such a barren environment. Cream coloured flowers start to bloom from thick stalks until gradually the whole domed shape of each plant is covered with flowers and the beach becomes a garden. Seed pods form and finally the leaves begin to yellow, wither and die. At the end of the life cycle all that remains is the dry brittle bones of the plant. Until next year.

Squares Remodelled
Framed photographs of groyne post tops.
The groyne posts started life identical, but have been given individual characteristics by the tides. Depending on their location the degree of wear varies and some are covered in barnacles or seaweed. Others have lost their metal retainers and erode more quickly. One local artist, Cliff Crawford, has made a study of the Bexhill groynes over the last 20 years ( https://cliffcrawfordart.co.uk/intervention-2022/ ) As a response to the changes wrought by the sea on the groynes, I altered all of the frames in some way; painting, sanding, nailing, weaving and etching.
